Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters? +

Five optional tags you add to a URL — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content — that tell your analytics where a visitor came from. They're the oldest and most reliable attribution method on the web.

Which UTM parameters are required? +

Source and medium. Without them most analytics tools file the visit as 'direct' and your campaign effectively vanishes from reporting. Campaign name is strongly recommended; term and content are optional.

Why does this tool lowercase everything? +

Because utm_source=Instagram, instagram and IG are three different sources to every analytics tool. Lowercasing and hyphenating automatically is the single easiest way to stop your reports fragmenting.

Should I shorten a UTM link before sharing it? +

Usually yes. Tagged URLs are long and ugly in a bio or a WhatsApp message, and long URLs also make denser QR codes. Shortening keeps the tags intact while looking clean — and adds click analytics of its own.
