QR Code Analytics: How to Measure Offline Campaigns
Print used to be the channel you couldn't measure. QR codes fixed that — if you use dynamic codes with analytics.
Static vs dynamic QR codes
A static QR code encodes your destination URL directly. Change the URL and the printed code is garbage. A dynamic QR code encodes a short link instead — the destination lives in your dashboard, editable forever, and every scan is recorded.
What scan analytics tell you
- Scans over time — did the poster in the metro work better in week 1 or week 3?
- Scan location — city-level data shows which placement actually drives traffic
- Device split — QR traffic is nearly all mobile; a desktop 'scan' usually means someone shared the link onward
- Scans vs clicks — LinkForge tags QR traffic separately, so a link used both online and in print reports both channels honestly
A simple offline attribution setup
- Create one short link per placement: /poster-lagos, /flyer-berlin, /package-insert.
- Generate each link's QR code (SVG for print — infinitely sharp at any size).
- Print, ship, and watch per-placement scans in your dashboard.
- When the campaign ends, re-point the links to your next promotion — no reprint needed.
Design tips that affect scan rates
- Keep a quiet zone (margin) around the code — busy backgrounds kill scans
- Dark-on-light scans more reliably than light-on-dark
- 2 cm × 2 cm minimum for arm's-length scanning; bigger for posters
- Always test with both iOS and Android cameras before printing
